My ritual knife did a good job of cutting through all the cable ties. The girls thanked me and rubbed their wrists where the plastic had chafed their skin. Dusty and Abigail had run to fetch Madame Copperfield, and when I saw her striding toward us in her thick long skirt, her platinum walking stick glinting in the sun, I couldn’t help feeling consoled in the way a daughter might feel when seeing her mom after missing her.

“Well,” Copperfield said rather breathlessly once she had reached us. “I see your mission was successful.”

“It was close,” I replied. “But we made it.”

The directress nodded, appearing exceptionally pleased. “I knew you would.”

“I didn’t,” I said, and laughed. “It was seriously touch-and-go.”

“And you, young man?” she addressed the pickpocket.

“I, er—”

“We couldn’t have done it without Apollo,” I replied. “He was able to get through all the magical barbed wire and trip switches on the way in. And no one I know could have portaled so many people out.”

“Excellent work, all of you.” While she wouldn’t take any credit for the rescue mission, I could see the pride in her expression at her alumna’s success. “I have informed the captain of the Scorpions of the rescue. She has someone phoning parents to fill them in, and is sending various teams over to evaluate the girls.”

“Doctors?” I asked.

“Yes. And psychologists specializing in deprogramming.”

“Deprogramming?” asked Dusty, who had sidled up to us.

“Helping escapees of a cult, basically,” I said. “Healing the damage done by the indoctrination.”

“Were they hurt physically?” asked Copperfield in a low voice.

“Not as far as I know,” I said. “The Smaragdes were careful to take good care of their fodder.”

She nodded, a grim expression creeping onto her face.

The matrons arrived with large bags and began erecting gazebos on the field. Sam, Rick, and Apollo helped them while the rescued girls chatted quietly amongst themselves. Half an hour later, the field was abuzz with activity. Ambulances, police vans, mysterious black SUVs. Sirens and flashing lights. Medics rushing about, parents shouting in relief and wonder that their daughters were home, and alive.
